I'll report back again in a few days with the results of my own tests along with a roundup of any feedback I receive here. If you use one of these operating systems and know of security software that plays nice with your system, please either drop me a line or leave a comment below and include the operating system and the name of the software. As such, I'm currently putting together a testbed Windows 98 installation to see what sorts of anti-virus, anti-spyware and firewall tools currently play nice with that OS. I realize that no matter what, some people will continue to use these systems indefinitely. I've received a few e-mails from readers who felt that the experts quoted in our story were too quick to urge people to migrate away from Windows 98 and ME for security reasons. The Washington Post on Saturday ran a story I wrote about Microsoft ending support for Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition (SE), and Windows Millennium (ME), pointing out that after July 11, Microsoft will no longer ship software security patches for those operating systems.
